CYMHS is pronounced `KIMS'. It stands for Child and Youth Mental Health Service. It is a free service run by Mater Misericordiae Health Services and funded by Queensland Health. We provide confidential assessment, counselling, treatment, support and help for young people aged under 18 who are experiencing a range of emotional, behavioural and drug- and alcohol-related problems. If your child is over 18, you can still contact us for details of where to get help, or check out our contacts link on the home page.
The main things you need to know are:
If your child is under 18, CYMHS is a safe place where he or she can come and talk about emotional, psychological, behavioural and alcohol- and drug-related problems. It's worth seeing your local doctor or community health service worker or your child's school teacher or guidance officer in the first instance if you are unsure where to go for help. If your child agrees, we can talk to family members, their doctor, school nurse, social worker, psychologist or school staff when needed. We have parents and paid consumer consultants who actively inform us of issues that need attention and directions we should be taking. Our service is a public health care service, so it won't cost you anything to talk to us. Our clinics are open Monday to Friday, from 8.30 am to 5.00 pm.
