Grandparent/parent and just coping Annie Apr 16, 2010
I am a fifty two year old grand parent, I have been caring for my grandchildren for 5 years there ages are 7 and 9, and also have a 13 year old daughter just diagnosed with ODD. My 13 year old is a very big challenge for me and her behavior is wearing me down. The combination of both grand-parenting and parenting with my daughters behavioral problems has left me feeling very isolated. At present I am receiving counseling due to depression. At the moment I am feeling pretty burnt out and lack energy, finding it hard to keep up with all the manual tasks of running a home and so on. Also being a centrelink recipient I am required to look for work or study and this is creating more stress. Are there other grandparents going through similar situations as myself. I live in the Bundaberg region and do not know of any support networks in my area.. Kind regards , Annie.

Re:
Hi Annie, my heart goes out to you, I have a granddaughter i am raising who is aspergers, i have another grandson who is 6 who is odd/pdd/adhd. I look after him at times to give his mother a break. She was under the same thing had to find work etc but got a lovely lady from centre-link and told her the story of her son and said she was finding it hard to look for work as she had to be available in case the school rung as he had these disabilities. She tollk this on board and said if she got a letter from her Dr or specialist they would give her a year off basicallly from looking for work. This was in Toowoomba. Can you go and talk to someone at centrelink. Just a suggestion. Good luck Regards Kay
